Addition in Math
Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers to find their total, called the sum. This operation is represented by the plus symbol (+). For example:
5 + 3 = 8
Addition has the following properties:
- Commutative: a + b = b + a
- Associative: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
- Identity: a + 0 = a
Addition With Decimal Numbers
The addition of decimal numbers follows a similar process to the addition of whole numbers. Here are the general steps:
- Line up the decimal points: Ensure that the decimal points of the numbers you are adding are aligned.
- Add from the right: Start adding the digits from the right, just like you do with whole numbers.
- Carry over if needed: If the sum of digits in a column is greater than or equal to 10, carry over the extra digit to the next column on the left.
- Continue to the left: Repeat the process, moving to the left and adding the digits in each column along with any carry-over from the previous step.
- Write down the result: Write down the result with the decimal point in the correct position.
